Zcash (ZEC) rallied approximately 5% to near $839 on Monday after developers released a new cryptography toolkit that dramatically speeds up private transaction creation, addressing a key usability obstacle for the privacy-focused blockchain.
Market Context
The move in ZEC comes as broader crypto markets experienced a pullback during Monday morning trading. Zcash has positioned itself as a privacy-centric alternative to transparent blockchains like Ethereum and Bitcoin, but slower transaction times for shielded transfers have limited its use cases for everyday payments. The release of Zakura Common targets this friction point directly.
The announcement follows the July launch of Zakura, an alternative Zcash node developed by a team led by Zcash cofounder Sean Bowe. That initial release laid out ambitious scaling goals targeting more than 50,000 private transactions per second, roughly equivalent to major card networks like Visa. Today's cryptography stack represents another step toward that objective.
Analysis
The core innovation in Zakura Common addresses the cryptographic work a user's wallet must perform before sending a private transaction. Shielded Zcash transfers hide the sender, receiver and transfer amount, but proving these hidden transactions follow network rules requires substantial computation on the client side. That calculation has been among the primary reasons Zcash transactions can feel slow.
According to Zakura, the new software makes this pre-transaction calculation more than 14 times faster on mobile devices and over five times faster on desktop computers. Hashing operations see even larger improvements at over 21 times faster, while the verification work nodes perform runs between four and eight times quicker. The result is transaction creation dropping from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases.
A significant advantage of the new toolkit is that it requires no upgrade to the Zcash network itself. Wallet developers can adopt the open-source libraries on the existing network, lowering implementation barriers. Vizor Wallet has already picked up the technology, and Zakura's own software moved to version 1.3.0 incorporating the new stack.
Key Numbers
- Transaction creation time: from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds (93% reduction)
- Mobile proof generation speedup: over 14 times faster
- Desktop transaction creation: more than five times faster
- Hashing operations: more than 21 times faster
- Node verification acceleration: between four and eight times faster
- ZEC price movement following announcement: approximately 5% increase to near $839
What to Watch
Traders should monitor whether additional wallet providers adopt the Zakura Common stack in coming weeks, as broader adoption would signal growing network utility. The upcoming NU7 upgrade, which proposes 25-second block times, could provide additional tailwinds if the faster transaction processing holds under testing conditions.
Project Tachyon development remains a longer-term catalyst to watch, with that initiative also having moved to the new cryptography stack. The gap between Zcash's current throughput and its stated goal of 50,000 private transactions per second represents substantial room for scaling-related announcements.
ZEC price levels around $839 will serve as near-term resistance, while support may emerge at prior consolidation zones if the broader crypto market pullback continues.
