Bitwise has launched Automated Token Portfolios (ATPs) built with Coinbase's newly available tokenized U.S. stocks, enabling eligible investors to hold and automatically rebalance baskets of equities directly in their crypto wallets.
Market Context
The announcement comes a day after Coinbase debuted tokenized versions of Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet on its Base blockchain network. The debut marked a significant step toward bringing traditional equity ownership on-chain, with Coinbase signaling more stocks would follow. Bitwise's ATP products now offer portfolio-level automation on top of these individual tokenized shares.
Analysis
The ATP structure represents a departure from traditional fund wrappers like ETFs or mutual funds. Instead of transferring assets to a manager in exchange for fund shares, investors retain custody of the underlying tokenized equities while Glider's software executes rebalancing based on Bitwise-designed models. "For over a century, getting a professional model meant handing your assets to a fund," said Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan. "ATPs mean you can keep the assets in your own wallet, and the model comes to you." The products target sophisticated investors outside U.S. jurisdiction due to regulatory considerations around tokenized securities.
The initial ATP lineup includes three themed portfolios: an AI-focused strategy, a robotics theme, and an expanded Magnificent Seven basket that adds SpaceX alongside the core group of Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Tesla. Notably, Bitwise's portfolio models include Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, SpaceX and Sandisk—tokens Coinbase has not yet confirmed launching, suggesting potential future additions to Coinbase's roster.
Glider, the portfolio technology provider handling rebalancing automation, previously partnered with Ondo Finance earlier this year to offer personalized portfolios using Ondo's tokenized stock offerings. Bitwise itself is expanding beyond its flagship crypto ETFs into on-chain asset management, including DeFi vault curation—a parallel track of decentralized finance strategy aggregation.
Key Numbers
- $9 billion: Bitwise's total assets under management as a crypto ETF issuer
- 7: Number of equities in the core Magnificent Seven ATP (AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, GOOG, AMZN, META, TSLA)
- 8: Total holdings including SpaceX (SPCX) in expanded Magnificent Seven portfolio
- 4: Tokenized stocks Coinbase has launched on Base so far (Apple, Nvidia, Meta, Alphabet)
What to Watch
Traders should monitor whether Coinbase expands its tokenized stock lineup to include Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla and Sandardisk—names included in Bitwise's ATP models but not yet confirmed by Coinbase. The regulatory treatment of these products for U.S. investors remains a key gating factor, as the ATPs are currently limited to non-U.S. eligible investors. Further partnership announcements between Glider and other asset managers could signal broader adoption of wallet-based portfolio automation versus traditional fund structures.
