Bitcoin has shed roughly 50% of its value over the past year, trading near $60,309 as the broader crypto market endures an extended downturn that Binance founder Changpeng "CZ" Zhao attributes to a confluence of factors including artificial intelligence competition, geopolitical tension and the sector's characteristic four-year cycle.
Market Context
The world's largest cryptocurrency opened 2026 trading near $89,000 and climbed to just over $96,000 before entering a sustained decline. Bitcoin hit an all-time high north of $126,000 last October, marking the peak from which it has since retreated by approximately 52%. The broader crypto market capitalization has mirrored this weakness, with sentiment souring across digital asset classes as traditional finance allocators rotate capital toward AI-related investments that have captured speculative attention.
Analysis
In an exclusive interview with CoinDesk earlier this month, CZ outlined his view that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence firms are absorbing funds that might otherwise flow into cryptocurrency markets. While acknowledging this dynamic has contributed to the current weakness, he characterized it as potentially positive for the industry over the long term.
"Over the long run, the industry will develop," CZ said. "There's going to be more and more demand for financial technologies, because there will be more and more transactions, so the industry will grow. So, I'm not worried about the industry or short-term price fluctuations."
The Binance founder acknowledged his perspective may reflect personal stakes in the outcome. He noted most of his net worth is tied to the BNB token, giving him substantial alignment with crypto market health across both Binance and Binance.US platforms.
On regulatory matters, CZ suggested that even if the U.S. Digital Asset Market Clarity Act—known as the Clarity Act—fails to pass this year, American competitiveness in crypto regulation would likely continue. He pointed to other legislative efforts including the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act as evidence of progress, while noting countries worldwide are advancing their own digital asset frameworks.
"Those are really important, but those are not gonna impact the growth of crypto longer-term," CZ said of individual regulatory bills.

What to Watch
The upcoming U.S. midterm elections could reshape the political landscape for crypto. CZ noted that if Democrats retake congressional chambers, they may scrutinize President Donald Trump's pro-crypto stance—including the pardons granted to crypto executives, among whom CZ counts himself. Despite potential increased regulatory scrutiny ahead, CZ indicated willingness to cooperate with any inquiries.
"There will be more scrutiny, more inquiries, more clarity," he said. "We're very happy to provide information if they're seeking information."
On prediction markets and their growing role in price discovery, CZ sees promise but acknowledges speculation remains inherent across financial instruments. "The speculators actually provide the liquidity, so it's good that you have that speculation," he noted.
