Baillie Gifford, the 118-year-old Edinburgh-based investment firm, has unveiled a tokenized fixed-income fund in partnership with global custody giant BNY, marking another milestone in traditional finance's embrace of blockchain technology for real-world asset deployment.
The Baillie Gifford Enhanced Yield Fund (BAGEY) operates through a U.K.-regulated Open-Ended Investment Company structure and gives eligible investors access to an actively managed, short-duration portfolio of public corporate bonds using both the Ethereum and Solana public blockchains as the register of record.
"Tokenisation has moved from concept to real-world application," said Katey Neate, global head of investor solutions at BNY. "This launch shows how regulated fund structures can evolve to meet the needs of a more digital, connected marketplace."
Market Context
The tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) has gained significant momentum across institutional finance in recent years, with major custody banks and asset managers racing to develop blockchain-based solutions for traditional securities. BNY's involvement signals growing mainstream acceptance of digital asset infrastructure from one of the world's largest custodians.
NatWest Trustee and Depositary Services will serve as the fund's depositary, providing additional institutional credibility to the structure. The fund is denominated in dollars and currently offers a yield of approximately 7%.
Analysis
Theo's Golden, head of digital assets and tokenization at Baillie Gifford, emphasized that this is not simply placing a token on top of an existing fund structure—a distinction that has become a key talking point among institutional tokenization advocates.
"The Baillie Gifford Enhanced Yield Fund is not a token placed on top of a fund. It is a fund issued onchain, with the blockchain serving as the register of record," Golden said in a statement. "Investors hold the fund directly: direct ownership, direct recourse."
This approach of native on-chain issuance rather than wrapper-style tokenization could set a precedent for future institutional products seeking to leverage blockchain efficiency while maintaining regulatory compliance.

What to Watch
The fund's availability is initially limited to eligible investors in the U.K., Switzerland and Cayman Islands, subject to applicable laws and distribution restrictions. Market participants will watch for potential expansion of eligibility as regulatory frameworks continue developing globally.
Institutional adoption metrics, on-chain transaction volumes, and competing launches from other major asset managers will be key indicators of whether this structure resonates with traditional finance allocators seeking exposure to tokenized fixed-income products.
