Five former Ethereum Foundation researchers have launched Ethlabs, an independent nonprofit research and development organization backed by some of ether's largest corporate holders, as the network undergoes a significant organizational shift.
The new organization announced Monday is funded by SharpLink Gaming (SBET), Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), Consensys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, alongside Anchorage Digital, Octant and SNZ. Ethlabs will be led by former senior Ethereum Foundation contributors Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf and Julian Ma.
Market Context
The launch arrives amid a period of upheaval at the Ethereum Foundation, the Switzerland-based nonprofit coordinating much of the network's research and development. Last week, co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang announced her departure from leadership, adding to a growing list of high-profile exits that include Ma and Monnot who left earlier this year.
Analysis
Ethlabs represents what supporters describe as a broader transition toward a "multi-node" development model, where independent organizations share responsibility for advancing the network rather than relying heavily on the Foundation. Joe Lubin framed the initiative as recognition that Ethereum should have multiple steward nodes configured uniquely to evolve and protect the network.
"Ethereum is at a pivotal moment," said Ansgar Dietrichs, Ethlabs' executive director. "As blockchain systems move rapidly into mainstream use, the coming years will define the shape of the onchain economy for decades."
The organization's initial research agenda focuses on faster transaction settlement, expanding Ethereum's capacity and improving infrastructure for institutions issuing tokenized assets and stablecoins on-chain. Ethereum dominates the $300 billion stablecoin market with a 53% market share and hosts roughly half of the $32 billion tokenized asset market, according to RWA.xyz data.
Key Numbers
- $300 billion: Total stablecoin market capitalization where Ethereum holds 53% dominance
- $32 billion: Tokenized real-world asset market with Ethereum hosting approximately half
- Five former senior Ethereum Foundation contributors leading Ethlabs
- Seven institutional backers including SharpLink, Bitmine and Consensys CEO Joe Lubin
What to Watch
Ethlabs said its research agenda will remain independent through an external grants administration process, with funding contributors receiving transparency reports but no direct control over technical priorities. All research will be published openly. The organization is positioned to shape Ethereum's development trajectory as institutional adoption of tokenized assets accelerates and the Foundation continues managing leadership transitions.
