Bybit has launched options trading on Tether Gold (XAUT), enabling traders to hedge risk and speculate on gold prices through a fully regulated derivatives framework for the first time on a major cryptocurrency exchange.
Market Context
The global gold options market is already a multi-billion-dollar industry dominated by traditional venues like CME Group and India's MCX, with substantial volume traded over-the-counter. Bybit's entry brings this established asset class on-chain at scale, representing a significant convergence point between crypto derivatives and traditional finance (TradFi).
Analysis
The launch targets institutional traders seeking exposure to gold through cryptocurrency infrastructure without leaving the digital asset ecosystem. XAUT tokens represent ownership of one troy ounce of physical gold stored in vaults, providing a bridge between tokenized real-world assets and crypto-native trading tools.
Bybit partnered with Orbit Markets, a leading options market maker active in both crypto and traditional finance, to ensure institutional-grade liquidity from day one. The team includes former senior executives from precious metals trading desks, notably the ex-APAC Head of Currencies and Precious Metals at Deutsche Bank.
"As tokenization accelerates, we believe the distinction between crypto and TradFi will continue to narrow," said Jimmy Yang, co-founder of Orbit Markets. "Gold options are a cornerstone of traditional derivatives markets, and we are excited to see growing interest in TradFi derivatives within crypto."
The XAUT options operate as European-style contracts settled in USDT, with each contract corresponding directly to one XAUT token. Traders access the products through Bybit's Request for Quote (RFQ) system designed for OTC deals, allowing institutional participants to execute larger block trades efficiently.
Key Numbers
- XAUT represents 1 troy ounce of physical gold per token
- Options are European-style contracts settled in USDT stablecoin
- First top-tier exchange with institutional liquidity support for XAUT options
- CoinCall previously offered XAUT options since November 2024 on smaller platforms
- Global gold options market valued in billions, dominated by CME and MCX
What to Watch
Monitor whether Bybit expands its tokenized commodities derivatives suite beyond gold. Traders should watch open interest growth and bid-ask spreads as liquidity matures. The RFQ system pricing will be critical for institutional adoption, along with any potential listing on CME or other regulated venues that could further legitimize the XAUT ecosystem.
Tether Gold's market cap and premium/discount to spot gold prices may see increased arbitrage activity as options markets develop.
