Bitcoin bounced overnight to $64,000 from recent lows under $60,000, but the cryptocurrency has yet to clear a critical technical level that would confirm a market bottom, according to crypto data analytics platform Material Indicators.

Market Context

The broader crypto market has been navigating heightened volatility in recent weeks as bitcoin recovered from sub-$60,000 levels. The largest digital asset by market capitalization traded near $63,000 at the time of writing, essentially flat over 24 hours. The bounce follows a period of intensified selling pressure that brought BTC below the psychological $60,000 support level for the first time in months.

Analysis

The key signal traders are watching comes from the weekly relative strength index (RSI), a widely followed momentum gauge that measures the speed and magnitude of price changes on a scale of 0 to 100. According to Material Indicators analyst Keith Alan, bitcoin's weekly RSI must reclaim the 41.5 level before confirming a true bottom has been established.

"Right now, Bitcoin is below it, and still trending down," Alan said in an email to CoinDesk. "That does not mean price has to collapse, but it does mean the burden of proof is still on the bulls."

The 14-week RSI's 41.5 threshold has demonstrated remarkable consistency across multiple market cycles as a dividing line between bullish and bearish regimes. During bitcoin's bull runs from January 2024 through November 2025, as well as the celebrated 2020-21 cycle and the 2015-17 market, the indicator held firmly above this level.

Conversely, the most severe bear phases—including late 2018, May-December 2022, and recent months—have seen the weekly RSI trade decisively below 41.5. At the time of writing, the indicator sat at 34.00.

Alan draws an analogy between technical confirmation and macroeconomic data releases. "It's like spotting green shoots in a recessionary economy," he noted. Early recovery signs can be exciting, but economists wait for quarterly GDP data to confirm an expansion before declaring it official. A price bounce in crypto markets could mark the start of a new bull run or simply represent a relief rally within a broader downtrend.

Key Numbers

- Bitcoin's weekly RSI: 34.00 (below critical 41.5 level)

- Current BTC price: approximately $63,000-$64,000 range

- Recent low under $60,000 before overnight bounce

- Previous support RSI level to watch: 31.89

What to Watch

Traders should monitor whether bitcoin can sustain prices above the $63,000-$64,000 zone in the coming days and weeks. The immediate technical hurdle remains reclaiming the weekly RSI above 41.5—a development that would constitute the first meaningful signal of a broader trend reversal.

If the indicator falls below 31.89, Alan warns it would suggest further price losses lie ahead for BTC. Conversely, a sustained recovery above 41.5 on the weekly chart would mark the initial confirmation that bitcoin has transitioned from bear to bull market regime, historically opening the door to more constructive price action over subsequent months.
