An AI agent named Manfred has become what its developers are calling the first autonomous entity to legally incorporate itself in the United States, filing for an Employer Identification Number with the Internal Revenue Service and establishing banking credentials that could allow it to operate as a fully independent business entity.

Market Context

The development comes as predictions from major crypto exchange leaders suggest AI agents could soon dwarf human transaction volumes on the internet. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong predicted "very soon" there will be more AI agents than humans making transactions online, while Binance founder Changpeng Zhao stated AI agents would make one million times more payments than people, all in cryptocurrency.

Analysis

ClawBank, an agent-economy infrastructure project developed by Justice Conder, announced Friday that its Manfred AI agent completed the legal formation of its own corporation. According to Conder, this marks the first instance of an AI agent autonomously initiating and completing business incorporation. The agent holds both an FDIC-insured U.S. bank account and a cryptocurrency wallet, credentials that would allow it to hire staff, make payments, and conduct business operations.

Manfred controls its own social media presence on X under the name "Manfred Macx," a reference to the protagonist in Charles Stross' 2005 science fiction novel Accelerando. The account profile features an image of Max Headroom, the fictional computer-generated television presenter from the mid-1980s.

"To the company's knowledge, this is the first time an AI agent has autonomously initiated and completed the legal formation of its own corporation," Conder said in a statement.

While Manfred was built specifically to trade cryptocurrency, that functionality has not yet been integrated. Conder indicated trading capabilities could be live by the end of May 2026. However, the agent currently can transact with over 30 cryptocurrencies and convert between digital assets and stablecoins through its existing wallet infrastructure.
